Terrace Mirage House brings indoor and outdoor living together in a seamless dance. The renovation of a Victorian terrace in Chippendale, Sydney, by Alcami Architecture, centers on a fully openable courtyard that expands usable space and floods the interior with natural light. Mirrored walls around the courtyard trick the eye into perceiving a larger, floating ceiling, while a chamfered ceiling nods to James Turrell-inspired Skyspaces and frames a neighboring tree view. A bespoke system of bi-fold and sliding panels on the ground floor turns the home into an integrated open-air environment when desired.
At the core of the project is a long, pebble-lined path from the entrance, flanked by a mirrored wall that visually elongates the space. The path leads to a living area where a cantilevered bench seems to float before a glass wall opening to another courtyard garden.
The design consciously reflects the owner's cultural background by weaving Spanish and Arabic influences throughout. Elements such as metal chains, roller blinds, and textured surfaces recall Mediterranean architecture, while horseshoe arches evoke the iconic Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. This combination shows how a standard terrace can become a highly personalized home rather than a conventional renovation.
Architect Victor Alcami describes the project as aligning with Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenology of space, emphasizing memory and lived experience in architecture. Vernacular materials create a bridge between childhood memories and the present home, producing a deeply personal environment.
A bold request from the client—orange as a signature color—shapes many spaces. Bright orange accents appear in furniture and architectural features, including kitchen units and a concealed fridge behind bamboo roller blinds. A central island, with a backlit orange onyx base, acts as a focal point and doubles as a table, allowing the kitchen and dining areas to merge seamlessly. The bathroom makes the strongest statement, with an immersive orange palette: an orange acrylic bathtub, freestanding washbasin, and walls clad in orange mosaic tiles.
Private rooms occupy the upper level, where the main bedroom receives a balcony and daylight from a skylight in the adjacent corridor. The rest of the first floor houses a study or guest room that can be closed off by a bi-fold partition. A continuous row of orange cupboards runs the length of the plan, unifying the space and emphasizing its volume.
Alcami views this approach as an alternative take on the terrace house typology, one that dissolves the boundary between terrace and garden to maximize light, air, and openness within tight constraints. This project challenges the usual terrace renovation formula—moving bathrooms and adding a rear living area—and instead reimagines how a home can breathe when the garden is fully integrated.
