Pat Lam's All Blacks Reality Check: New Zealand Rugby's Wake-Up Call (2026)

Former Blues coach Pat Lam has made a striking revelation about the All Blacks, suggesting that New Zealand Rugby (NZR) is in dire need of a ‘reality check.’ The truth is that over the last few years, New Zealand has no longer maintained its position as the dominant powerhouse in international rugby and has even made some regrettable history.

Both Scott Robertson and his predecessor Ian Foster have been at the helm during a period marked by disappointing results since 2019. However, Lam questions whether the governing body has taken enough responsibility for these outcomes. To reclaim their status as leaders in the sport, Lam believes NZR must recognize that they are currently trailing behind other teams and must adjust their strategies accordingly.

‘South Africa is clearly the best’

In an interview with DSPN hosted by Martin Devlin, Lam stated, “There are exceptionally high standards in New Zealand rugby, but it’s crucial to take a step back and assess the situation realistically. Right now, New Zealand’s most significant advantage is that everyone understands they are not the best team in the world.” He emphasized that South Africa has established itself as the top-ranking team globally. Moreover, he pointed out that other nations have significantly improved, partly because New Zealand has historically set the benchmark, compelling other teams to innovate and evolve in order to compete.

Lam argues that it’s not only the fans who need to adjust their expectations; he feels the New Zealand Rugby Union also needs to acknowledge this shift in dynamics. He posed an important question: "How do we elevate ourselves back to being the best and make the necessary decisions to achieve that?"

With claims surfacing about discontent among players regarding Scott Robertson’s leadership, there appears to be growing uncertainty within New Zealand Rugby. Lam highlighted that while the All Blacks have traditionally led the way in terms of innovation, that dominance is no longer the case, especially with teams like South Africa, under the guidance of astute coach Rassie Erasmus, having not only caught up but surpassed them.

Lamenting what he perceives as a limited perspective within New Zealand rugby, Lam insists that a shift in mindset is essential.

Lack of Awareness About Global Talent

He recounted an incident from last year when England's team visited New Zealand, and players Sevu Reece and Rieko Ioane were unaware of English talents Tommy Freeman and Manny Feyi-Waboso. Lam remarked, "They were like, ‘who?’ They didn’t know who they were." He shared a similar experience involving former All Black Mils Muliaina, who was unfamiliar with players from Connacht until he encountered their talent firsthand.

Lam reflected on the insular nature of New Zealand rugby culture, saying, “In New Zealand, we often remain in our bubble, believing we are the best, and we wonder why victories aren’t happening.” He acknowledged that while public expectations remain high, it’s essential for the New Zealand Rugby Union to shift their perspective.

“If we approach the situation from the standpoint of ‘we’re not the best and we need to become the best,’ and make decisions based on that understanding, it could turn into a competitive advantage for New Zealand,” he explained.

This admission not only challenges the prevailing narrative around New Zealand rugby but also opens the floor for discussion: Are the expectations placed on the All Blacks too high? Can acknowledging their current standing ultimately lead to a resurgence in their performance? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
