With the departure of Oscar Onley, the Picnic PostNL team finds itself in a challenging position. Onley's move to INEOS Grenadiers leaves a void, and the team will now look to Poole, a younger compatriot, to lead the charge. Poole, despite being only 22 years old, has already spent three seasons in the WorldTour, a testament to his talent and early success.
Poole's career has been a rollercoaster, marked by both triumphs and challenges. He's battled physical and mental hurdles that have slowed his progress as a GC contender.

The Impossible Deadline of the Giro
Poole's preparation for the Giro d'Italia was severely hampered by family matters and a collarbone break suffered at Strade Bianche. He admitted that making the Giro was already a stretch, let alone being in top form.
Despite the setbacks, Poole delivered a solid performance. He finished 11th overall, even with a significant time loss on the gravel stage. He estimated he was at 85% fitness due to his injuries. He reflected, "In reality, I was good enough for perhaps fifth in the Giro, and that was with bad preparation."
No End to Setbacks
Poole's season was cut short due to the Epstein-Barr virus, which forced him to withdraw from the Tour de Pologne in August. This break provided him with time to reflect on his future goals. He believes he can achieve even more with the team's support.
Poole is contracted through 2027, which means he could have two years of leadership from the team after Onley's move. He acknowledges missing his colleague, with whom he climbed the ranks of Picnic PostNL.
"Obviously, it's a shame to lose Oscar, but he's also my friend, and I'm happy for him. It's a move he wanted, and he deserved it. There's always a silver lining, and hopefully we can see some good performances from certain guys at Picnic PostNL, who maybe wouldn't have the opportunities with Oscar still being here."
Poole will kick off his season at Volta ao Algarve, followed by Paris-Nice. While his complete schedule is not yet finalized, he is likely to return to the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana. The Tour de France, however, appears to be a target for stage hunters and sprinters.
