A high-profile Malaysian religious figure is being urged to disclose information about a Korean cult reportedly operating in Malaysia that is allegedly involved in suspicious and deviant activities.
In Putrajaya, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail asked Perlis Mufti Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin (popularly known as Dr Maza) to submit any relevant details directly to the police.
"In the Special Branch, there is a unit dedicated to handling deviant teachings from various faiths and their followers. If he has information about the group, its activities, methods, or the individuals involved, I encourage him to come forward and share it with the authorities," Saifuddin stated at a press conference following the ministry’s monthly assembly on Thursday, December 11.
He elaborated that the Special Branch maintains a unit specifically tasked with addressing deviant teachings, which encompass practices that diverge from established norms across different religions and communities.
Saifuddin stressed that individuals with knowledge of such cases should provide information to the authorities, especially to the police.
When asked if police reports had been filed about the movement, the minister noted that, to his knowledge, no reports have been received to date.
Earlier reports indicated that Mohd Asri had referenced a briefing on the cult movement during a meeting of the Perlis State Fatwa Committee.
There were also claims that several Muslim Members of Parliament and other notable figures in Parliament were actively involved in supporting and assisting the movement.
