Imagine stepping into a golfer's dream hotel, one that even the legendary Rory McIlroy has praised, located just minutes away from one of the United Kingdom's premier golfing destinations.
I had already tackled the intimidating Giant’s Grave, navigated the breathtaking Causeway, and even triumphed over the mighty Himalayas. Yet, now, I stood before Calamity Corner, a challenge that loomed large in my mind. Would it live up to its daunting reputation, much like the other treacherous holes I faced on Dunluce Links at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland? Here I was, following in the footsteps of golfing greats at a course renowned for its challenges.
For those who are passionate about golf, Royal Portrush is a name that resonates deeply. Having hosted The Open twice since 2019, this club is well-known among enthusiasts of the sport. And Calamity Corner? It’s just one more exciting hurdle on what many consider to be one of the finest courses globally.
This particular par three hole offers breathtaking views in every direction across the links. However, players must contend with significant drops surrounding three sides of the green, which adds an extra layer of challenge.
As I prepared to take my shot, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. To my delight, my tee shot found the green—a promising start! With the help of our excellent caddie, Jamie, I managed to complete the hole with just two putts, achieving par. This accomplishment became a cherished memory, only surpassed by the thrill of scoring a birdie at the picturesque fifth hole by the beach.
After such an exhilarating afternoon on the course, there was only one fitting way to celebrate—by sipping on the signature Calamity Corner cocktail at the hotel bar.
I was staying at the luxurious five-star Dunluce Lodge, situated conveniently alongside the fourth fairway. Just like the famed course, the lodge derives its name from the nearby castle ruins. Set to open in early 2025, the hotel features 35 all-suite rooms, a rejuvenating spa, and even a putting green for practice. Notably, it’s a favorite retreat for former world No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy, who has graced its halls.
The restaurant at the lodge focuses on showcasing local Irish produce, offering delicacies such as Carlingford oysters and seared Thornhill duck. Additionally, the lodge boasts an impressive whiskey collection, which includes a rare 46-year-old single malt sourced from the nearby Bushmills distillery.
The next morning, filled with fond memories from my Royal Portrush experience and a hearty Irish breakfast, I set off to tackle my next golfing adventure at Castlerock. Located just a 25-minute drive from my hotel, this course is another beautiful gem situated in a region rich with spectacular golf options, including Portstewart and Bushfoot.
Castlerock runs alongside the River Bann, making it a scenic venue, and has hosted a European Tour event in 2023. Its Mussenden Links features three holes adjacent to the railway, including the challenging fourth hole. The views from the 16th and 17th holes, which overlook Donegal, are simply breathtaking.
After completing my round at Castlerock, I returned to Portrush to visit the renowned Harbour Bar, a popular spot among top golfers during The Open. Spanning three floors, this lively pub offers food options ranging from £15 burgers to £20 half rotisserie chickens. When I visited, the atmosphere was electric, with live music playing late into the evening as patrons enjoyed pints of Guinness and exchanged golfing tales from around the globe.
On the first day of my trip, I also savored a pint of the iconic stout at the Culloden Estate, located in the suburbs of Belfast. This exquisite hotel features a spa and swimming pool, along with three dining options. I appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as a refreshing mocktail upon arrival and delightful cupcakes waiting in my room. For dinner, I chose the Cultra Bar, where I enjoyed main courses like daube of Irish beef or pork chop with black pudding, each priced at £28.
Conveniently, the hotel is just ten minutes away from Holywood, Rory McIlroy’s home course where he learned the game. Rounds there cost £60, and the course is perched in the hills above Belfast, providing stunning views of the Lough, especially on the challenging back nine holes. The clubhouse even features a dedicated area celebrating Rory's major victories, complete with replica trophies and Ryder Cup memorabilia.
I had teed off early to ensure I could squeeze in a visit to one of Belfast’s most iconic attractions—the Titanic Experience. Located just yards from where the ill-fated liner was launched, this exhibition narrates the story of the ship’s construction, tragic sinking, and eventual discovery. Among the artifacts on display is a life jacket, one of only twelve known to exist, and the violin played by a band member as the ship sank.
This captivating exhibition added an enriching layer to my trip, which was already filled with remarkable golf, warm Irish hospitality, and delicious food. Far from being a calamity, this journey was truly above par.
