Deadly 67-Vehicle Pileup on Kan-etsu Expressway in Japan (2026)

A tragic event unfolded on Friday night in Japan, as an enormous collision involving 67 vehicles took place on an expressway amid snowy conditions, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving 26 others injured. This incident occurred just as the nation was gearing up for its year-end holiday festivities, making the situation even more poignant.

According to the Gunma Prefectural Highway Police, the catastrophic pileup on the Kan-etsu Expressway was initiated by a crash between two trucks in Minakami, a town located approximately 160 kilometers (about 100 miles) to the northwest of Tokyo. The aftermath of this initial collision quickly escalated into chaos, as the wreckage blocked parts of the roadway, leading following vehicles to lose control on the slippery, snow-covered surface.

Compounding the disaster, a fire broke out at the far end of the wreck, engulfing 20 vehicles, some of which were completely consumed by flames. Emergency services battled the blaze for roughly seven hours before they could extinguish it, highlighting the challenging conditions they faced in the snow.

Among the casualties, a 77-year-old woman from Tokyo tragically lost her life in her passenger vehicle. Additionally, authorities later recovered the charred remains of another victim found in the driver’s seat of a truck that had been reduced to a smoldering shell. Of the 26 people who sustained injuries during this harrowing incident, five were reported to be in serious condition, underscoring the severity of the situation.

As heavy snow warnings were in effect late Friday, many citizens across Japan were beginning to embark on their holiday travels, adding a layer of urgency and concern to the ongoing situation.

In the wake of the accident, portions of the expressway have been closed to facilitate police investigations and the necessary clearing of debris. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by winter weather conditions and raises important questions about road safety during peak travel times.
