Bengaluru's Luxury Hotels: Unhygienic Food, Expired Products, and Violations Exposed (2026)

The luxury dining experience at a 3-star or 5-star hotel is often synonymous with quality, safety, and impeccable hospitality. But what happens when the food served feels no different from street cart fare, which is often doubted for hygiene and quality? This is a harsh reality for many luxury hotels in Bengaluru, as revealed by a recent Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) raid. The FDA's surprise inspection drive across 26 hotels in the city uncovered a disturbing array of food safety violations, including rotten meat, chicken, fish, and expired bakery products, as well as unhygienic storage, fungal growth on vegetables, and inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items. The regulatory body has sent notices to the concerned Food Business Operators (FBOs) and initiated adjudication proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The hotels under scrutiny include The Lalit Ashok (Annex South), Shangri-La Bengaluru, Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru, Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield, Taj Yeshwantpur, and The Radisson Blu (The Atrium). The latter hotel was found with a staggering 105 kg of expired food articles, comprising 50 kg of chicken, 25 kg of meat, 23 kg of fish, and 7 kg of vegetables. The FDA's inspection drive was launched following several public complaints, including those shared on social media, alleging unhygienic practices and the sale of substandard food at various eateries. The next step involves sending 35 food samples to a laboratory for testing, with 30 special teams constituted for surprise inspections. This incident raises a deeper question about the effectiveness of food safety regulations and the need for stricter enforcement to ensure the quality and safety of food served in luxury establishments. It also highlights the importance of public awareness and the role of social media in bringing attention to food safety issues. In my opinion, this incident serves as a stark reminder that no establishment, regardless of its star rating, is immune to food safety violations. It is crucial for hotels to prioritize hygiene and quality to maintain their reputation and ensure customer satisfaction. The FDA's actions are a necessary step towards holding businesses accountable for their food safety practices, but it is also essential for consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. This incident should prompt a re-evaluation of food safety standards and practices across the industry, with a focus on preventing such violations in the future.
